help the strong one filmmakers get to hollywood!

    indiegogo.com/thestrongonefilm

In the fall of 2011, three NC State students made the connections and introductions they were looking for to embark on bringing a heart-felt, autobiographical poem to life—and to the big screen.

It all began with a story. Jurassic Parking Lot was an original work—an autobiographical poem of Tim's life growing up. Tim's poetry had always been well-received at readings and Windhover open mics around NC State's campus and Josh Bielick, Windhover audio editor and business management senior, began to take notice. A cold introduction and a few emails later and the conception for The Strong One" began.

Nicholas Sailer, a aspiring and tested filmmaker, writer and director and winner of last year's Campus Moviefest "Best Picture" at NC State, introduced himself to Josh Bielick, a passionate photographer, amateur filmmaker and music snob. The two both had the same interest in mind—collaboration.

As Nick and Josh set out to plan production and screenwriting for their February competition, Josh became captivated by the poetry readings by Tim Reavis at a literary arts open mic. "I've got to see this poem come to life," Josh thought to himself. A cold introduction and humble request to adapt Tim's work to screen led to the three getting together and planning the production for "Jurassic Parking Lot"—which later turned into "Dinosaur Youth" and finally, "The Strong One."

We were extremely lucky to have some fantastic talent casted by Nicholas Sailer for the film. The combined efforts of our production crew and cast certainly led to our success. We could not have done it without them.

We were fortunate enough to win Best Picture, Best Directing and Audience Choice award at the NC State CMF premiere and now the film will continue on to the International Grand Finale in Hollywood in June.

We're looking for some financial support to help us make the trip, represent the film, ourselves, the story, the characters and our school as well as make the most of an incredible opportunity.

What We Need & What You Get

We'll need about $2000 to cover 2/3rd of our trip expenses. This includes the follwing:

airfare (~$500 round trip per person)
    hotel accomodations (~$147 a night)
    transportation (minimal)
We'll raise the rest of the money ourselves and make each dollar afford as much as possible.
    The Impact

    Other Ways You Can Help

We're looking for a place to stay for one night in Hollywood/LA. That's three respectful, responsible college students looking for a floor to sleep on and a hot shower for one night of our stay in LA.

sound situations presents generationals | the marsh woodwinds sessions

Sound Situations and the Independent Weekly's Hopscotch Music Festival present the first installment of the Marsh Woodwinds Sessions. The Sound Situations crew set up shop for two days during Hopscotch and captured intimate performances from six different bands playing the festival. Marsh Woodwind's eclectic inventory of collectibles, rare musical devices and wind instruments made for a comfortable and aesthetically appealing venue, both for bands and the audience. In producing these session recordings the team worked together in a live performance setting to craft rich, real content that finds a balance between amped-up and un-plugged.

the marsh woodwinds sessions teaser | sound situations

We're really excited to announce a new six-video series, The Marsh Woodwinds Sessions, co-presented by Raleigh's Hopscotch Music Festival. We were honored to work with the venerable Hopscotch coordinators and founders to bring you six musicians/groups from across the states to our improvised Hopscotch session studio. We've taken over Marsh Woodwinds, a vast and winding music sales and repair shop with an extremely eclectic inventory of collectibles, rare musical devices and wind instruments. This secluded treasure on North Person Street includes an upstairs venue of restored vintage instruments, a stage and room for a crowd. We found it befitting and invited some of our favorite Hopscotch acts to play a small set for an intimate present audience and for our TV and web followers. This stuff is good; we can't wait to show it to you.

The group's received high marks for their Fantasy Memorial and they brought it all with them to Raleigh, North Carolina for the weekend. We were thrilled to have them; we hope you enjoy the performance.

    sound situations matinée | troubel

Boone, North Carolina. The days are cooler now; it's August. We spent the afternoon wandering about, looking for a place to fill with music. The five can make some beautiful noise. We settled into an apartment opposite of King street. Gear loaded in; people followed. The living room quickly turned into our music room and everything was falling into place. Some found their way from the street by the sound of their strings and voices. Eventually, the room was full, the floor left no open seat and most were getting comfortable.

As the set progressed, we heard some beautiful songs from 'The moutains, the broken.' Some describe Troubel as better in person than on their album. I believe both experiences to be fulfilling, but the sound of the violin and cello reverberating through our ears and against the walls is a wonderous thing. Sweet, soft harmonies and some lyrical eloquence left us hushed and grasping for more. Further along, as if all of us present weren't completely content with the immersion into this banjo rolling, fiddling, harmony of folk that we couldn't get enough of, we were given two newer, unrecorded songs.

The night came to an end. Dinner was on the stove and the road (and tour) called in the morning. All parted ways and just as it had begun — it ended.

Featuring Free Electric State and Shana Tucker.

    FREE ELECTRIC STATE:

Free Electric State is a torrent of swirling, layered, sustained, electric melodies with a precise percussive undertoe. This rock combo is complemented perfectly by powerful, intense female vocals that will pull you in with soft, fitting harmony and throw you back when they take off with vigor. Their sound is a myriad of proper 'nu-gaze'; Koslowski and Willams lay enveloping backgrounds of rhythmic effected guitar with vocals that complete the picture. You can catch the band around Durham, the triangle and sometimes in Baltimore, where the bands origins stem from. Each of the four parts of Free Electric state offer a solid background in musical passion and livelihood. Take a look behind the music and hear a good bit about who FES is, what they do, where their sound comes from and what it means to them to be musicians.

    freeelectricstate.com

    SHANA TUCKER:

Shana Tucker, multi-talented musician and cellist from New York, might describe her music as chamber soul. "It evokes an intimate feeling," she says. Her music is a sultry pastiche of acoustic pop and soulful, jazz-influenced contemporary folk. Every nuance of her sound is a integral piece of her musical identity. You may hear subtle boss nova rhythms with a touch of latin influence, but her lyrical execution drives her music with feeling and passion. Her classical training and life journey as a musician has shaped her unique sound thoughout her career. Her sound has character – a personal touch that leads your ears into a 'sitting on the edge of your seat' feeling. We're excited and honored to bring her story and music to our audience.

Tad Walters and Th' Bullfrog Willard McGhee

As a child, Th' Bullfrog Willard McGhee paid no attention to notion that "telling stories won't get you anywhere." For Bullfrog, telling a story has made him who he is — a traveling blues musician who has taken a footing in the Piedmont of North Carolina. He is a true blues man taking his music across the country. His rhythmic picking and mean slides will grab your attention, while his puffs on a harmonica hung about his neck and his raspy voice and quick winks swoon all those watching. The interlude he delivers between songs are worthy of a weekly newspaper column, but most importantly, like any blues man, he never responds to anyone who calls him by his Biblical name. Born in West Virginia, he's spent time in Chicago, Boston, California and even worked in New Orleans as a cab driver until Hurricane Katrina relocated him to the Triangle. In this episode of Sound Situations we'll hear the blues music of Th' Bullfrog accompanied by Tad Walters and learn a bit about what it's like to be a historic relic in a modern musical landscape.

    Dark Water Rising

With a population of less than 50,000, Lumberton is home to the Native American tribe the Lumbees. The city sits on the coastal flat lands of Eastern North Carolina and is named after the Lumber River — which runs through the community. The Lumber River is surrounded by dense swamps marked by large bald cypress trees. When the river swells — the swamps grow. The dark river water rises and the large root-basin of the cypress trees become hidden. This is the land of Robeson County and home to the band Dark Water Rising. Led by vocal gem and small-town sweetheart, Charly Lowry, the six-piece is balanced equally with feminine and masculine parts. The group has a sound marked by a soulful swing and matched with determination. We'll hear amplified songs along with a special acoustic set from the upstairs lunchroom of the Mecca Diner in downtown Raleigh. We'll learn what it is to be a young band from Eastern North Carolina and why they frequently travel to the Triangle.

We humbly present the Sound Situations season one opener.

    Background:
Combine some of the brightest and most talented jazz musicians in the triangle, give them striking personality and a passion for enjoying the hell out of music and you've got Peter Lamb and the Wolves. Lamb is joined by"Baddass belter and keyboardist" Mark Wells, stand-up bass and bass saxophone player George Knott, Al Strong on trumpet and The Beast drummer Steven Koffman. The group's sound is a kaleidescope of rich musical backgrounds, strong cultural influence and each member's personal relationship with his musical abilities. We'll hear the group talk about what keeps them going, how they feel about their music and what being a musician means to them. We'll show you 14 minutes of why they're our favorite and since they're local to Raleigh, you'll have ample opportunities to hear them yourself.

I Was Totally Destroying It is a five-piece powerpop band from Chapel Hill, North Carolina, featuring current and former members of Saddle Creek band Sorry About Dresden. After self-releasing and touring the country behind their first full-length album, the band signed with Portland-based indie label Greyday Records. Their impressive touring track-record and sterling local reputation made them an obvious choice for the show. Their polished sound yields consistency, technical execution and a great sound replete with driving synthpop beats, powerful vocals and an infectious rhythms that almost force your head to bob along in time. We'll hear them talk about their history, balancing life as a dedicated member, what they think about their music and what makes them special. Discover for yourself why IWTDI has a loyal local fan base and a growing national following.

a sound situation | tin can sailor

Where was the stage? It didn't matter. The curb would suffice. The always eager Raleigh First Friday crowd gathered outside The Raleigh Times to hear something some of them were familiar with and others - soon to follow. Tin Can Sailor played through their set. Listeners sat closer and closer, heads peeked over heads, passers-by couldn't help but stop in their steps. Everyone caught a glimpse. What most didn't know was that afterwards Tin Can Sailor would steal away from the crowd to across the street and underground in the Fish Market NCSU student gallery. They were unplugged, underground and in a matter of minutes, ready to play again for us. This time - different. The gallery was fitting, the sound reverberating and the ambiance, unmatched. The performance was intimate and we were a privileged audience. The set includes 'reform' and 'pack it up.' Find more happy times on their free debut EP at tincansailor.bandcamp.com
